Buying research
UX research agency or platform: roles, scope and costs
Assign owners for study design, recruitment, sessions, analysis and reporting before choosing between an agency and a platform. A platform supplies tools your team operates; an agency can deliver an agreed scope of research. Some providers combine both, so compare the work included and the effort that remains with your team.

About this guide
The examples describe two research consultancies and three platforms, including the site sponsor, Versive. Other provider pages were reviewed on October 26, 2026; Versive capabilities were reviewed on October 28, 2026. These are published-service descriptions, not results from hands-on product testing. Features and support need to be confirmed for the intended study.
ResearchList is sponsored by Versive. Other providers do not pay for inclusion. Versive appears where its documented capabilities relate to the topic, with sponsor labels on comparison entries.
Assign owners for each part of the study
List the work: define the question, design the study, find participants, prepare the product or prototype, run sessions, analyze evidence and agree actions. Assign an owner to each step. If several steps have no qualified owner, a software purchase alone will leave the same gap.
An agency can also use a platform, and a platform company can offer researchers. Ask the proposed team to describe the actual engagement rather than relying on its company category. The important distinction is whether you are buying access to tools, a defined research service or both.
| Work to be done | Platform-led project | Agency-led project |
|---|---|---|
| Study design | Confirm who on your team will write and review it. | Specify the agency's responsibility and your approval point. |
| Recruitment | Check available sourcing routes and your screening workload. | Ask for feasibility, verification and replacement rules. |
| Analysis | Reserve internal time to review recordings and evidence. | Define the questions, evidence standard and reporting scope. |
| Product decisions | Name the person who will turn findings into action. | Include the necessary stakeholder discussion and handover. |
What your team owns in a platform-led study
A platform-led approach is worth considering when your team can frame the question, design appropriate tasks and interpret the results. It can also make sense for repeated work where a researcher will maintain the study approach and compare findings over time.
Test the workflow with a realistic example before committing. Use a prototype with branching, an audience with meaningful screening criteria and the kind of output your stakeholders need. A smooth demonstration with generic participants does not establish that your actual study will be easy to run.
For example, Versive can combine a website or Figma task with survey questions and AI-moderated follow-ups, so your team can examine both task behavior and the reasons participants give. Your team still sets the study objective, reviews the questions and decides how to apply the findings.
What an agency can deliver
Consider an agency when the research question is ambiguous, the participant group is difficult to reach, the setting requires coordination or your team lacks analysis capacity. External moderation may also be useful when internal stakeholders hold strong assumptions that need examination.
Choose a deliverable that matches the decision. A list of usability problems can support a design iteration; a roadmap choice may need a broader synthesis of needs, constraints and evidence. Ask what the agency will hand over so your internal team can inspect and reuse the work.
Compare software, services and internal effort
Build a common scope covering participant sourcing, incentives, sessions, languages, analysis, stakeholder access and retention of project materials. For software, ask about usage limits and the cost of the support you expect to need. For agency work, identify included revisions, recruiting assumptions and what happens when the scope changes.
Treat AI-generated summaries and themes as material to review. Ask how researchers can inspect source responses, resolve contradictions and check whether important minority experiences disappeared in aggregation. Agree who is accountable for the conclusions presented to decision-makers.
Provider examples
These descriptions summarize published services. Confirm the scope, team and availability for your project with each provider.
| Provider | Published services | Questions to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| AnswerLab | Research connected to experience strategy | Ask whether the proposed team owns study design, recruitment, synthesis and the stakeholder discussion. Request an example of how research changed a product decision, including what the evidence could not resolve. |
| Bold Insight | Contextual, physical-product and human factors work | Describe the product, setting, users and tasks early. Ask what can realistically be simulated, what must happen in context, and which specialist expertise the named project team will bring. |
| VersiveSite sponsor | AI-moderated interviews, surveys and real-user usability tests | Try your actual prototype or website, confirm participant sourcing and screening, and review how responses and recordings support the findings. Choose whether your study needs real-participant evidence, a separate AI persona test, or both. |
| Userlytics | Testing tools with optional research support | Ask which activities are included in the platform agreement and which require consulting. Specify whether you need help writing tasks, moderating, analyzing findings or producing recommendations; those are separate responsibilities. |
| Dscout | Research across sessions and everyday use | Ask your team to demonstrate the complete workflow, from participant criteria to a checked finding. Confirm which tasks require your own researcher, how participant activity is managed and how AI-generated interpretations can be traced to underlying responses. |
AnswerLab
Research connected to experience strategy
AnswerLab offers qualitative and quantitative research, experience strategy, concept validation and ongoing discovery. Its services combine research delivery with work on product and experience questions.
Confirm in the proposal: Ask whether the proposed team owns study design, recruitment, synthesis and the stakeholder discussion. Request an example of how research changed a product decision, including what the evidence could not resolve.
Bold Insight
Contextual, physical-product and human factors work
Bold Insight documents usability, contextual, diary and other research methods for digital and physical products. Its research toolbox includes lab, in-context and remote sessions.
Confirm in the proposal: Describe the product, setting, users and tasks early. Ask what can realistically be simulated, what must happen in context, and which specialist expertise the named project team will bring.
Versive
Site sponsor ยท research platform
AI-moderated interviews, surveys and real-user usability tests
Versive combines interview questions, surveys and concept or usability tasks in a single study with real participants. Its testing options include Figma prototypes, live website tasks, images and videos, card sorting, and tree testing, with AI follow-ups. You can invite your own audience or recruit through integrated panel providers. Separate AI persona tests support early design exploration before validation with real users.
Confirm in the proposal: Try your actual prototype or website, confirm participant sourcing and screening, and review how responses and recordings support the findings. Choose whether your study needs real-participant evidence, a separate AI persona test, or both.
Userlytics
Testing tools with optional research support
Userlytics offers moderated and unmoderated testing, information-architecture methods, surveys and diary studies. It also lists consulting support, moderated groups and expert heuristic analysis alongside its software.
Confirm in the proposal: Ask which activities are included in the platform agreement and which require consulting. Specify whether you need help writing tasks, moderating, analyzing findings or producing recommendations; those are separate responsibilities.
Dscout
Research across sessions and everyday use
Dscout's platform supports usability tests, interviews, field studies, diary studies and surveys. Its offering also includes AI-assisted study creation, moderation and analysis.
Confirm in the proposal: Ask your team to demonstrate the complete workflow, from participant criteria to a checked finding. Confirm which tasks require your own researcher, how participant activity is managed and how AI-generated interpretations can be traced to underlying responses.
Common questions
Is unmoderated testing always the faster choice?
It can remove live scheduling, but the full project still includes design, recruitment, preparation and analysis. Compare the timeline for your actual audience and tasks rather than assuming one format is always faster.
Can we combine an agency and a platform?
Yes. Specify who selects and operates the tools, who has access to the study materials and how results will be handed over. A shared tool does not remove the need for clear research ownership.
